Feng Mengtian

中阮

Zhongruan

National First-Class Zhongruan Virtuoso

Feng Mantian, a National First-Class Artist, virtuoso of the ruan (Chinese plucked lute), and visionary musician, is one of the most pivotal figures in contemporary ruan performance and composition. He has long dedicated his career to the contemporary expression of traditional Chinese music, as well as the rigorous research and restoration of ancient Chinese instruments.

Born into a musical lineage, he began studying the ruan and yueqin (moon lute) in his childhood under his father, the renowned yueqin maestro Feng Shaoxian. In his youth, he joined the China National Traditional Orchestra as a professional performer. Having spent his early career exploring the frontiers of Chinese modern music, he eventually returned to the roots of traditional heritage, embracing the ruan as a profound medium to understand and articulate Chinese music and cultural philosophy.

For over three decades, Feng has conducted exhaustive research into instrument craftsmanship and acoustic systems. In 2006 and 2009, he successfully developed the "Fretless Zhongruan" and the "Zhongruan with Hidden Soundholes," offering revolutionary structural and acoustic solutions for the modern zhongruan. Driven by a deep reverence for history, he also undertook the historical restoration of the ancient Tang Dynasty ruanxian, basing his work on extensive research of the legendary mother-of-pearl inlaid ruanxian preserved in the Shosoin Repository in Nara, Japan. This groundbreaking restoration provided crucial empirical evidence for both the historical lineage and contemporary expression of Chinese string instruments.

In his musical compositions and live performances, Feng seamlessly fuses traditional music, avant-garde improvisation, and contemporary sonic concepts to forge a highly distinctive and personal expressive voice. His signature concert brand, Up and Down the Mountain (Shan Xia Shan Shang), has been staged over a hundred times in acclaimed concert halls both across China and internationally.

For Feng Mantian, music transcends mere technical virtuosity; it is a profound vehicle for cultural heritage and spiritual consciousness. To him, performance is not just about the creation of sound, but an essential ritual for establishing a meaningful relationship between human beings and the world.

His rendition of Nostalgia (Huai Xiang Qu) was recorded and published by the China Record Corporation in the prestigious compilation Masters of Suona and Guanzi.

Parallel to his stage career, Niu has dedicated decades to the research, reform, and structural evolution of the suona, striving to preserve and modernize Chinese traditional wind instrumentation. His proprietary "Niu’s" series—comprising the traditional suona, as well as the newly engineered keyed soprano, keyed alto, keyed tenor, keyed bass suonas, and the bass houguan (throat pipe)—have become standard instruments in the orchestration of modern Chinese orchestras. Today, "Niu's Suona" is the premier brand of choice for professional orchestras, universities, and conservatories worldwide.
